The Methodist Church is committed to responding to the environmental crisis as part of its mission to care for God's creation. By encouraging churches to engage in sustainable practices, the Methodist Church aims to reduce its carbon footprint, promote biodiversity and inspire individuals and congregations to adopt eco-friendly practices. The Methodist Church has set an aspirational target of becoming a net zero carbon emissions Church by 2030.
Eco Church is an award program, designed by A Rocha UK, designed to help churches incorporate care for creation into their everyday life. The program provides a simple but effective framework for churches to work through different areas of church life and earn Bronze, Silver or Gold awards as they progress.
Registering your church for Eco Church is simple and free. To begin, please visit the A Rocha UK website here, where you will receive instructions about how to create an account. Once registered, your church will complete a short survey to assess current environmental practices. From there, you will receive tailored advice and resources to help you work towards the Eco Church award.
The South Essex Circuit is proud to have started its journey to be a registered Eco Circuit and encourages the adoption of Eco Church by churches in the area. We are very grateful to have Gill Sutton as our Eco Champion. If you have any questions about promoting Eco Church to your congregations, please contact Gill at suttongll@aol.com.
