The journey of this stained glass window began in Clifton, Oxfordshire in 1851 when it was originally installed in St James Church. The window which depicts Christ's crucifixion remained in this location for over one hundred years until the church became redundant in 1974/5 when the window was taken into storage. Around this time St. Andrews church in Herongate was being refurbished by the local Methodists having been purchased from the Anglicans. Members of the Methodist community wanted to add some significant features to the worship space . An architect involved in the refurbishment knew of the existence of a repository at Ely Cathedral. Arrangements were made to view the windows which were chosen and then installed behind the altar on the East wall. They were a focal point in the church especially when the morning sun streamed through the rich colours of the glass and cast the colours onto the carpet..
When St. Andrews sadly closed in 2022 another new home was needed. This time after extensive restoration & cleaning the windows have been set in state-of-the-art light boxes before being installed in Western Road Methodist church in Billericay Essex.
There is also a fourth part of the window which is still in the museum at Ely Cathedral. There is a framed poster of this beside the original in Western Road Church with further information.
